The Second Debate = One GOP, Under Trump

September 27, 2023 – The Lincoln Project releases the following statement regarding Wednesday’s GOP primary debate: 

“It’s only fitting the debate takes place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, contrasting the legacy of one of democracy’s biggest champions and the current GOP Presidential field who all still pledge their loyalty to Trump, despite being an insurrectionist who just insinuated the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff be executed for treason. 

“For the sake of fake normalcy, the moderators will pretend this is a regular presidential debate and that these candidates have real policy positions. But they won’t ask the candidates about the actual questions facing the Republican Party: Do you stand with Trump’s open fascism? What crime could Trump commit that deserves a prison sentence? How about the shutdown Trump wants in an attempt to defund his prosecutors?

“But that’s because there’s no real internal disagreement. It’s the whims of the deranged MAGA base. 

“Donald Trump destroyed the party of Reagan, ruling as an ego-driven authoritarian who threatens the free press and makes a mockery of America abroad. This MAGA-infested party governs for no one but their conspiracy theories and Supreme Leader, and will gleefully cheer on a government shutdown. 

“Joe Biden is the only candidate who will bring decency and a profound respect for democracy to the White House. To vote otherwise is a dangerous mistake.”
