THE LINCOLN PROJECT STATEMENT ON THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE INSURRECTION
January 6, 2023 — The Lincoln Project releases the following statement on the Second Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection:
“Today is the anniversary of one of the most disturbing events in American history: as President, Donald Trump planned and executed an insurrection to overthrow a valid election and install himself as the illegitimate leader of the nation.
“If it weren’t for dedicated public servants throughout the nation – like the police who put their lives on the line fighting the mob at the capitol, or the election officials who face continued threats and intimidation – Trump’s attempts to overthrow the election would have succeeded. It is an important statement to the world that President Biden honors these individuals for their service to the nation today.
“Thanks to the insightful work of the bipartisan January 6th Congressional Committee, the American people have gained valuable insights into how Trump personally orchestrated the illegal effort and unleashed a movement that continues to this day. This movement is working to stifle dissent, consolidate power and purge the government of anyone who doesn’t agree with the MAGA ideology.
“The GOP was recast into an authoritarian nationalistic cult dedicated to Trump where no one dares to condemn or challenge him. The majority of the GOP Members of Congress are election deniers who don’t care about governing. In his campaign for Speaker, Kevin McCarthy subjugated himself before Trump to get an endorsement, while the holdouts are creations of Donald Trump’s influence.
“Prosecuting Donald Trump and his accomplices would ensure those responsible for the insurrection are held accountable. Defeating Trump and his MAGA candidates at the ballot box would ensure that the movement comes to an end. We ask that every American who wants to restore faith in our democratic institutions join with us in this existential fight for America’s principles.”
