THE LINCOLN PROJECT STATEMENT ON THE DEMOCRATIC THREATS HEADING INTO 2023
December 30, 2022 — The Lincoln Project releases the following statement as we head into the new year:
“As we enter 2023, democracy is in crisis around the world. The lies and deceit offered by authoritarianism are gaining popularity in both Europe and here in the United States.
“Generations of Americans knew that confronting totalitarianism was the only way to ensure freedom and secure individual rights. It is now our generation’s turn to take up the mantle and fight for democracy. As the only group with dedicated support from all sides of the political spectrum, The Lincoln Project is uniquely positioned to focus squarely on the greatest threats democracy faces in 2023.
“The most pressing threat is the Russian attack on civilization launched first in Ukraine. The fight for democracy is a global effort, and by supporting the Ukrainians in their war against the unprovoked Russian invasion, the United States is strengthening its own security.
“The second threat to democracy is the continued collapse of the GOP as a governing party. The GOP is controlled by MAGA and no longer cares about policy and doing the hard work of governing. MAGA GOP members like Kevin McCarthy are only concerned with gaining power. He wants to be Speaker of the House so badly, he is giving broad concessions that will make Majorie Taylor Greene a co-Speaker and make it nearly impossible to manage the legislative process. Their platform is simply to crush its opponents and wage a weird culture war in order to give more power to white men.
“Finally, there must be repercussions for everyone involved in the January 6th insurrection. The Lincoln Project will keep the pressure up so those responsible are held accountable. They must be made to feel the pain both politically and legally for their treachery. If not, they will only be emboldened to continue trying to overthrow democracy.
“We ask that you join us in our efforts to secure democracy around the world. This is the existential fight of our lifetimes and it is only by standing united that we can win.“
