THE LINCOLN PROJECT STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT BIDEN’S SPEECH ON THE SOUL OF THE NATION
September 1, 2022 — The birthplace of democracy in America is a fitting location for President Biden’s speech about the need for America to renew its commitment to democracy and pluralism.
America is at a dangerous moment whose threats come from within: fascism and authoritarianism are on the rise; privacy and individual liberties are threatened; politicians are openly embracing political violence as a campaign tactic.
That’s why tonight’s speech is a watershed moment. There’s hope in President Biden’s commitment to meet the moment and take on the destructive forces that are threatening the nation. As he said, “For a long time, we’ve reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”
This is not a partisan issue. The issues our nation must confront are not policy choices that are defined as liberal or conservative. It is foundational: will we move towards an ultra-MAGA authoritarian regime committed to rolling back individual rights and destroying dissent, or will we have a democracy that prizes freedom and individual thought?
Democracy requires engagement and no one can idly stand by. Every American who wants free and fair elections must stand up right now and make their voices heard. They must vote and get involved in the elections to ensure that America’s democratic ideals continue unabated.
The Lincoln Project is a leading pro-democracy organization in the United States — dedicated to the preservation, protection, and defense of democracy.
