Moderate GOP’s Refusal to Condemn Trump Threatens Democracy

June 9, 2023 – The Lincoln Project releases the following statement regarding Trump’s Federal Indictment:

“By refusing to condemn Trump’s illegal and immoral behavior, Trump’s political imitators and sycophants are undermining the rule of law to score political points with their extremist MAGA base. The plethora of coordinated statements by the MAGA GOP bending the knee are desperate cover for Trump’s criminal behavior meant to weaken confidence in the legal system.

“Anyone who expects the ‘moderates’ and the ‘problem solvers’ to come in and rescue the GOP is deluding themselves. Where are the statements condemning Trump? Where’s the “tough on crime” party when it counts?

“The GOP once held up the rule of law as a pillar of conservative values, but that was before it mutated from a political party into Donald Trump’s personality cult. As long as the rule of law is undermined by those who were elected to uphold it, American democracy is at risk of being overrun by autocratic forces actively working to destroy our democratic institutions.”
