THE LINCOLN PROJECT CELEBRATES THE DEMOCRATIC LEGACIES OF WASHINGTON AND LINCOLN

February 20, 2023The Lincoln Project released the following statement to commemorate the life and legacies of Presidents Washington and Lincoln:

“On Presidents Day, we celebrate the legacies of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln for their contributions towards the creation and continuation of democracy in the United States.

“Each understood their moment in history, choosing to put the cause of democracy and the protection of individual rights above their own personal ambitions. Not driven by wealth and fame, they had an overriding belief that our ‘democratic experiment’ could, and must, succeed.

“Washington’s commitment and sacrifice to the cause of self-government and the peaceful transfer of power set history’s defining example of democratic leadership. Lincoln insisted that living up to the democratic ideals of our nation’s founding be placed ahead of comfort and security. Both knew that for democracy to survive, then every generation must pledge its commitment to the cause.

“Today, our nation is once again at a crossroads. There is an authoritarian movement that is undermining our democratic institutions and trying to roll back individual rights. If our “democratic experiment” is to survive and flourish, then every American must commit to strengthening our democratic institutions and continue striving to reach the ideals promised in our nation’s founding.”

The Lincoln Project is a leading pro-democracy organization in the United States — dedicated to the preservation, protection, and defense of democracy.
