Lincoln Project: The Architect of Sedition Wins Speakership

October 25, 2023 – The Lincoln Project releases the following statement in response to Mike Johnson becoming Speaker of the House:

“Mike Johnson’s elevation to Speaker put one of the most undemocratic Members of Congress second in line to the presidency. As the Architect of Sedition, Mike Johnson led the charge to invalidate the 2020 election in the House and helped to incite the bloodshed of January 6th. He made “sedition palatable” to other Members of Congress who were not inclined to go along. 

“As Speaker, Johnson can be counted on to pursue an undemocratic agenda that highlights MAGA’s denigrating culture wars to excite the base, roll back individual rights and do whatever is required to put Trump back in the White House. He will pursue taking away Americans’ rights and individual liberty, cutting programs like Social Security and Medicaid, destroying voting rights, and putting on the table an end to support for our democratic allies like Ukraine.

“The 18 Republicans in Biden-won districts destroyed any “moderate” credentials they had and are now supporters of Donald Trump and his attempts to overthrow democracy. The Republicans in the so-called ‘Problem Solvers’ cannot be trusted to find moderating positions within the House. Both groups have submitted to Trump’s authoritarian playbook: they are fellow travelers.

“No member of the Congressional GOP holds democratic values. They have handed control to Trump and are empowering his desire to rule as a dictator. The people of this country have the opportunity to uphold real American values at the ballot box next year by voting for the only pro-America, pro-democracy candidate in this race, President Joe Biden.”
