Lincoln Project: No Savior For The MAGA GOP 

October 3, 2023 – The Lincoln Project releases the following statement regarding the House stripping Kevin McCarthy of the speakership:

“The insanity and destructiveness of the MAGA GOP was on full display today with two  historic firsts. The Speaker of the House was removed because of personal grudges while a former President – and leading candidate for the Republican nomination – was put under a gag order for threatening a court officer. 

“The Republican party of Trump cannot govern at any level; The MAGA parasite is eating them alive. There will be a reckoning for the GOP as the next Speaker will be even more of a MAGA apologist because that’s what the party demands. No one is coming to the rescue who has the courage to tell the truth, only cowards who hide behind the chaos and pretend to look busy. 

“McCarthy’s attempts to govern as an institutionalist is laughable. He repeatedly groveled before the MAGA caucus since becoming Speaker: Absolved Trump of his coup attempt, discredited the January 6th Committee, launched a sham impeachment process, cut off support for Ukraine defense, and begged Trump to support him for Speaker.  

“In stark contrast, President Biden continues to show his leadership at home and abroad; maintaining America’s fierce commitment to democracy in Ukraine, around the world, and here at home. The 2024 election is looming. History is watching.”
