The GOP’s Refusal To Condemn The Insurrection Has Destroyed The Facade With Latino Voters That The GOP Is The Party Of Law And Order

October 20, 2022The GOP’s refusal to condemn the insurrection has destroyed the facade with Latino voters that the GOP is the party of law and order. The Lincoln Project has worked with Mi Vecino, Florida’s first year-round voter contact organization, to maintain a dialogue with Florida’s Latino communities where there’s been a noticeable shift among Latino republican and moderate voters.

Mi Vecino’s data-first approach to registering and engaging voters has given them insight into recent party-switch data. Since the beginning of the January 6 hearings, Mi Vecino’s Miami program has registered 7% more Democrats than Republicans, with no switches from Democrat to Republican.

“We come to America to be safe. Our communities want law and order, and Republicans are showing that they’re all talk and no action,” says Mi Vecino Co-founder Alejandro Berrios.

Latino voters across the state are telling Mi Vecino that Republicans’ refusal to condemn Donald Trump is motivating them to stop supporting the GOP. The Lincoln Project sees this as an opening for Democrats to make a case to these voters and recently released a hard-hitting ad exposing Sen. Marco Rubio’s weak record on crime and highlighting his Democratic opponent Val Demings’ work as a former police chief.

Mi Vecino has completed thousands of survey conversations with voters, and shared with the Lincoln Project that over 50% of Latino Democrats and No-Party Affiliate (NPA) voters in Florida remain undecided in the U.S. Senate race.

“The January 6th Committee’s thorough investigation showed Donald Trump’s culpability to Latino voters of all party persuasions who are deciding they don’t want anything to do with the party that supports his crimes,” said Reed Galen, Executive Director of The Lincoln Project. “The GOP is no longer the party of law and order. Its refusal to condemn Trump shows its law and order messaging is a performative dog whistle that Latino voters are seeing through.”

Mi Vecino is Florida’s first year-round boots-on-the-ground voter registration and mobilization organization. After over a year of operations working in Florida’s Latino communities, voters and community leaders view us as trusted partners to share their fears, voting priorities and opinions.
