Lincoln Project : Americans Must Accept The Responsibilities Of Living In A Democracy

“Today we celebrate Independence Day, when our nation’s founders literally signed their names pledging to fight for their individual rights and freedoms.

“Despite generations of Americans sacrificing themselves to uphold those ideals, autocratic forces continue to destroy the meaning of the Declaration of Independence. They ignore its ambition to build a better nation, instead wanting to rip it up in pursuit of their own power.

“Every American must accept the responsibility that comes with living in a democracy. They must pledge to build a nation respecting individual rights, supporting the rule of law, and electing leaders willing to work on behalf of the common good over their own self-interest.

“Freedom must be renewed with every generation if America will continue as a beacon of freedom around the world.“
